Breaking memorized ideas and practices in women’s health nursing

Memorization, which can be defined as keeping a text in mind, has positive results as well as negative results like preventing change. Successful practices in medicine depend on research, observation, experiment. Thus, when practitioners do not keep updating their knowledges and do not consider diffirences their practices become ineffective. Since nurses provide care for individuals with various cultural, biological and sociological characteristics, important problems occur with regard to memorized ideas. Restriction of mobilization of mothers during labor based on memorization can be given as an example. Upright position of mothers shortens the duration of first phase of birth one hour and helps the baby move to find the most suitable position. Not all of the practices in the nursing field are based on memorization of course. Therefore we should have a critical approach towards our practices in the light of new knowledge and think whether we are using memorized ideas/practices or not. Breaking the memorized ideas and practices can be defined as changing all invalid habits which resist any kind of change and development.
