The characteristics of diesel emission: Environmental and health impacts

Dieselization rate for light duty vehicles is assumed to be greater in the near future due to the fuel economy offered by diesel fuel energy content and higher efficiency of diesel engines. However, emission analyses of diesel exhaust have shown that while CO and HC emission are less than or comparable to gasoline engine emissions, diesel particulate matter, C02 and NOx emission are considerably higher. Laboratory analyses also showed that the diesel particulate matters have distinguishing characteristics in terms of molecular weight and size which is mostly in submicro-meter range. This property makes diesel particulate matter emission quite vulnerable to contribute to the environmental quality degradation and public health deterioration.
